What Are the Highest Income Countries in 2026?
Global personal wealth grew strongly in 2025, with the number of millionaires increasing by 1.5% (individuals with net assets worth at least US$1 million), as estimated by the UBS Global Wealth Report. Across the year, nearly one million people crossed this threshold, equivalent to more than 2,600 new millionaires per day.
The United States has by far the largest millionaire population, with approximately 23.6 million people and around 41% of the estimated global total. It also recorded the largest annual increase, adding more than 440,000 millionaires in 2025.
With 23.6 million millionaires, the United States has more than the next several countries in the ranking combined. Mainland China ranks second with approximately 5.3 million millionaires, followed by Japan with 2.9 million.
These countries are not only centers of global wealth, but also feature among the world's busiest destinations for business, luxury, and long-haul travel.
Thanks to their financial resources and high volumes of international arrivals, many leading global economies have invested in digital entry measures designed to process travelers more efficiently, strengthen security, and move checks earlier in the journey.
That makes them a useful benchmark for comparing how digital border systems affect international visitors.
How Are Top Travel Destinations Using Digital Borders and How Can This Cause Issues Pre-Departure?
A digital border allows governments to check whether you meet certain entry requirements before you begin your journey, rather than when you arrive.
Airlines and other transport carriers usually confirm that you have the correct electronic authorization linked to your passport before departure. If that pre-approval is missing, you may be stopped from boarding.
Digital border systems usually use:
- Pre-travel authorizations for countries like the U.S., UK, and Canada
- Electronic visas for countries such as Japan and Australia
- Arrival declarations for countries including China, Japan and South Korea
These systems are generally designed to make travel faster and more efficient, but by moving important checks earlier in the journey, they often catch out unaware travelers and leave less time to fix mistakes.
Some common travel issues caused by electronic border rules and documents include:
- New digital forms are often required, even for visa-exempt travelers or if you’re only passing through in transit.
- Approvals are linked to your passport, so renewing your passport or using a different one to travel can invalidate your e-document.
- Different forms serve different purposes, so digital visas, travel authorizations, and arrival cards aren’t interchangeable.
- Some checks happen before boarding, so you need the right approvals before you’re allowed to depart.
- Timing can matter, and some applications must be submitted in advance or within a specific window to be validated.

2026 Digital Travel Hurdles for the World’s Richest Destinations
*The travel documents shown are the most common for short-term visitors. Depending on your nationality, purpose of travel, and circumstances, different visas or entry requirements may apply.
🟢 Countries with the lowest travel hurdles: Straightforward access
Not every digital border creates travel friction. In these destinations, the most common travel document is either straightforward to obtain or has practical alternatives if you can't complete it before departure.
That doesn't mean you can ignore the requirements, but you're generally less likely to face last-minute disruption than in other prosperous destinations.
Germany, France & the Netherlands (1 out of 5)
These European destinations currently have the lowest scores because ETIAS hasn’t launched yet, and the EU's 2026 timeline is now uncertain. Currently, visa-exempt travelers can continue entering the Schengen Area without an ETIAS authorization.
Once ETIAS is rolled out, you’ll need approval before departure. If you’re missing authorization, you could be prevented from boarding. Until then, the biggest risk is misinformation from unreliable websites claiming that ETIAS is already mandatory.
What to check Ignore websites claiming ETIAS is already required, as they’re likely to be fraudulent. Check the official launch status when planning your visit.

China (2 out of 5)
China receives one of the lowest scores because its online Arrival Card is designed to speed up entry rather than determine whether you can travel.
If you don’t complete it before departure, you can usually submit your details at the border using self-service kiosks or paper forms. Make sure you have all your details to hand, including your accommodation information.
What to check Keep your passport, first accommodation address, and travel itinerary readily available before departure.

Japan (3 out of 5)
Japan’s main hurdle affects travelers who need an eVisa. At the airport, you must open the official Visa Issuance Notice online and show it on a device such as a phone or tablet. Screenshots, PDFs, and printed copies are not accepted.
This is a separate requirement from Japan’s general immigration and customs procedures. Visa-exempt travelers don’t need an eVisa. All travelers need a completed customs form, but paper copies may be available.
What to check Confirm whether you need an eVisa and make sure you can open the official Visa Issuance Notice online on your phone. Complete a digital Customs Declaration if possible to save time on arrival.

South Korea (3 out of 5)
South Korea’s hurdles for travelers mainly center on determining whether you need a K-ETA, an e-Arrival Card, or neither. Some temporary K-ETA exemptions are in place, based on nationality. Valid K-ETA holders are generally exempt from the Arrival Card requirement.
The e-Arrival Card can be completed shortly before travel, but whether you need it depends on your nationality and K-ETA or visa status.

These countries have the strictest digital entry requirements in our index of wealthy nations. Missing the correct authorization can prevent you from boarding, and mistakes may take days or even weeks to resolve.
For these countries, checking the requirements and preparing your paperwork well before departure is essential.
United States (5 out of 5)
The United States tops the index because ESTA eligibility extends beyond simply holding the right passport. Previous travel history, including visits to Cuba after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions), can make you ineligible for ESTA and require a full visa application instead.
Because an existing ESTA may no longer be valid if your circumstances change, it’s important to review every eligibility question carefully before booking non-refundable travel.

United Kingdom (4 out of 5)
The UK ETA is required before travel for all visa-free visitors arriving by air, rail, or sea. If you try to travel without the correct authorization, carriers can deny boarding. The only exemptions are valid UK residence permit or visa holders, along with Irish nationals.
While similar travel authorizations, like the U.S. ESTA, have been in place for a number of years, the UK ETA was gradually rolled out over the last few years. It now applies to all visa-free travelers, apart from a few exemptions. EU travel permits don’t cover the United Kingdom.
What to check Verify whether you need an ETA, even if you have previously traveled without an authorization. It applies whether you're arriving by plane, ferry, Eurostar, or connecting through the UK. Make sure to apply in plenty of time for your trip.

Canada's eTA is relatively straightforward, but one key detail creates one of the most common travel pitfalls for international passengers. Many visa-exempt travelers need an eTA not only to visit Canada by air but also to transit through a Canadian airport, even if they never leave the terminal.
The requirement doesn't apply to most land or sea arrivals, so it can be easy to forget about the air travel and transit rule.
What to check Check every airport on your itinerary to see whether you'll transit through Canada. If you need an eTA, apply in advance of your trip.

Australia (4 out of 5)
Australia offers several electronic visitor authorizations, including the eVisitor, ETA, and Visitor visa. Which one you need depends on your passport and travel circumstances.
The eVisitor subclass 651, for example, is available only to eligible passport holders and permits repeated visits during a 12-month period, generally for up to three months at a time. Other travelers may instead qualify for an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) or need a Visitor visa (subclass 600).
Choosing the wrong pathway can delay your trip as you’ll need to submit a new application through a different program.

A small document issue or a requirement that slipped your mind can cause a big travel problem at the terminal. Easy mistakes to make with digital travel rules include:
- Missing authorization: You may be denied boarding altogether if you don’t have the relevant eTA or completed form.
- Incorrect passport details: Your approval must match the passport you present when you travel.
- Expired passport links: A valid authorization tied to an expired passport is no longer valid.
- Incorrect format: Email confirmations, screenshots, or printouts may not be sufficient to prove your approved status.
- Last-minute corrections: Fixing an error can mean reapplying and missing your flight.

How the VisaSyst 2026 Travel Hurdles Index is calculated
We selected the ten countries in this index by USD-millionaire population, using figures from the UBS Global Wealth Report 2026.
Each country then received a Travel Hurdle Score from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most challenging), based on VisaSyst's editorial assessment of four factors, drawn from the primary-document requirements for short-term visitors as published by each country's relevant government authority:
- Eligibility: whether the required document depends on nationality, residence, travel route, or travel history
- Timing: whether the document must be applied for within a specific window, or how far in advance
- Pre-travel checks: whether the document is verified before boarding, rather than on arrival
- Recovery options: how easily a missing or incorrect document can be corrected without missing the trip
Each factor was scored independently and combined into a single 1–5 rating per country. This score is a comparative editorial judgment, not a government rating, an official rejection rate, or legal advice. It reflects how much preparation and margin for error each system demands of a typical visitor, not how likely someone is to be admitted.
