Countries that Canadian Citizens Can Visit Without a Visa in 2026
Your Canadian passport lets you visit destinations across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Oceania without applying for a tourist visa. Popular options include France, Mexico, Japan, and Costa Rica.
However, visa-free travel doesn’t always mean you can travel with only your passport. Some destinations require an electronic travel authorization, an arrival form, or supporting documents before you board.
Use this VisaSyst guide to explore visa-free countries for Canadian passport holders, compare entry requirements, and check what you need for your next trip.
Entry information reviewed October 19, 2026. This guide covers short tourist visits with a regular Canadian passport.
The Power of the Canadian Passport in the Global Ranking 2026
A Canadian passport gives you access to a wide range of destinations without arranging a visa through an embassy. Passport rankings help measure that access, although their totals include several different entry procedures.
Global position and mobility score of Canada
Canada ranked seventh globally, with access to 183 destinations, in the July 2026 Henley Passport Index update. Henley’s Canadian passport profile also displays an access score of 183.
That figure doesn’t mean 183 countries admit Canadians with no additional paperwork. Henley awards access points for visa-free entry, certain visas on arrival, visitor permits, and electronic travel authorities. Destinations requiring an approved eVisa before departure generally receive no point.
The index also counts destinations rather than only independent countries. Always check your destination’s specific rules before booking.
Quick comparison with regional passports
Using Henley’s 2026 access scores, Canada offers broader travel access than the United States and Mexico.
These figures use the same index methodology. They shouldn’t be read as totals of destinations requiring only a passport.
Complete List of Visa-Free Countries for Canadian Passports
The regional tables below cover countries offering visa-free tourist entry to Canadian passport holders, with Hong Kong and Macao listed separately.
Visa-free means you don’t need a tourist visa for an eligible visit. You may still need an arrival declaration, proof of accommodation, sufficient funds, or an onward ticket.
Destinations requiring advance travel authorization appear in the following section. Overseas territories have their own entry rules and should be checked separately.
Visa-free countries in Europe for Canada
Canadian citizens can visit all 29 Schengen countries without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is one shared allowance across the area.
For example, spending 30 days in France and 30 days in Italy leaves you with 30 days elsewhere in Schengen during that rolling period.
Other European destinations also offer visa-free access:
These destinations appear in Canadian passport visa-exemption listings. Their individual stay limits and conditions vary.
Belarus allows qualifying visits of up to 30 days through designated airports, subject to additional conditions. The exemption doesn’t apply to flights arriving from or departing to Russia. Canada currently advises against all travel to Belarus.
ETIAS is not currently operating. Canadian travelers don’t yet need to apply, and the European Union will announce its launch date in advance. Schengen’s Entry/Exit System is a separate border-registration process.
The United Kingdom requires an ETA for most Canadian visitors, so it appears in the electronic authorization section below.
Visa-free countries in America
You can visit much of North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America without arranging a tourist visa.
These destinations offer visa exemptions for eligible Canadian tourist visits. Arrival procedures, fees, and permitted stays differ by destination.
Some useful stay limits include the following:
Your entry record determines when you must leave. An immigration officer may grant less than the maximum available period.
Keep these additional requirements in mind:
- Dominican Republic: Complete the mandatory electronic entry and exit form when traveling on commercial flights.
- Central America: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua participate in the CA-4 arrangement. Check your admission carefully rather than assuming each border crossing starts a new allowance.
- Suriname: Tourist visa exemption comes with advance online procedures and an entry fee. You must present the required payment voucher when flying.
These requirements are separate from an ordinary tourist visa application.
Brazil requires a tourist visa for Canadian citizens and shouldn’t appear in a visa-free list.
Saint Kitts and Nevis requires advance electronic travel authorization.
Visa-free countries in Asia
Asia offers several visa-free options, including Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Some destinations also require a digital arrival declaration.
The general visa-free classifications follow Canadian passport destination listings.
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macao, Mongolia, Singapore, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan have destination-specific limits shown above.
China’s exemption is time-limited. Canadian ordinary passport holders can enter for qualifying visits of up to 30 days through December 31, 2026. Check for an extension before planning a later arrival.
South Korea has extended its temporary K-ETA exemption for Canadians through December 31, 2026. Travelers using the exemption may still need an arrival card.
Thailand’s revised tourism exemption permits stays of up to 30 days from September 15, 2026. Its digital arrival card remains a separate requirement.
For Oman’s 14-day exemption, you must meet conditions including a return ticket, confirmed hotel reservation, health insurance, and sufficient funds.
Visa-free countries in Africa and Oceania
Canadian passport holders also have visa-free options across Africa and the Pacific.
These destinations provide visa exemptions for eligible tourist visits, subject to local admission requirements. Stay limits can differ considerably.
Check your admission record before leaving the immigration checkpoint, particularly if you plan a longer visit.
Seychelles, Cabo Verde, and Mozambique require advance digital procedures for ordinary Canadian tourist visits.
Rwanda and Namibia should also be checked under visa-on-arrival requirements rather than treated as passport-only destinations.
Destinations with Visa on Arrival (VOA) and eTA for Canadian Citizens
You may be able to visit additional destinations without attending an embassy appointment. However, you still need to complete the correct visa or authorization procedure.
An approval or visa allows you to travel and request admission. Immigration authorities still decide whether you can enter.
Which countries require a visa on arrival for Canada?
Examples of destinations offering visa-on-arrival options to Canadian tourists include the following:
These are examples, rather than an exhaustive VOA directory. Check fees, payment methods, supporting documents, and entry-point eligibility before traveling.
A free visa is still a visa. For example, the UAE’s free visa on arrival belongs in this category, even though no visa fee is charged.
Countries that require eTA or electronic travel authorization
Several destinations require Canadians to obtain permission before departure:
Requirements and exemptions vary. Obtain the appropriate approval using the passport you will travel with.
Australia also offers an Electronic Travel Authority, subclass 601, to eligible Canadian passport holders. Despite its name, Australia’s ETA is a visa category, so it shouldn’t be described as unrestricted visa-free entry.
Important: Don’t confuse an arrival declaration with travel authorization. Forms such as Thailand’s digital arrival card collect traveler information but don’t replace a visa or authorization where one is required.
Differences between eVisa (electronic visa) and embassy visa
An eVisa is a visa issued through an online application process. You usually submit passport details, supporting documents, and payment electronically before traveling.
An embassy visa follows the destination’s consular process. It may require an appointment, fingerprints, an interview, or submission of your physical passport.
The available route depends on your nationality, travel purpose, and length of stay. An online tourist visa does not automatically authorize employment, residence, or other activities.
Before starting an application, confirm which document your trip requires and whether you qualify for that application route.
Mandatory Requirements for Traveling Without a Visa from Canada
Visa exemption removes the tourist visa requirement for an eligible visit. You must still meet the destination’s passport, admission, and documentation rules.
The 6-month validity rule for passports
There’s no universal 6-month passport validity rule. Some destinations require 6 months remaining from arrival, others count from departure, and some accept shorter validity.
Check the rule for every destination and transit country on your itinerary. Your transportation company may also apply document requirements when deciding whether to board you.
Demonstration of sufficient funds and accommodation reservation
Border officers may ask how you’ll pay for your trip and where you’ll stay. Depending on the destination, you may need:
- Recent bank statements or other accepted proof of funds
- Hotel reservation or rental confirmation
- Host’s address and contact details
- Travel itinerary explaining the purpose of your visit
.
Requirements are destination-specific. For example, Oman’s short-stay exemption includes accommodation, funds, and insurance conditions, while Mexico may request documents supporting your stated travel purpose.
Mandatory return or transit ticket
Some destinations require a confirmed return ticket or proof that you’ll continue to another country. Your planned departure should fall within your authorized stay.
Costa Rica, for example, requires evidence of return or onward travel. If your ticket continues to another country, make sure you also meet that country’s entry requirements.
Check the entire route before departure, including any separate bookings that require you to collect luggage or pass through immigration.
FAQs About Traveling Without a Visa with a Canadian Passport
What’s the exact difference between a visa-free country and one with Visa on Arrival (VOA)?
Toggle faqs
Visa-free entry means you don’t need a tourist visa for a qualifying visit. A visa on arrival means immigration issues you a visa at an eligible entry point.
Fees and supporting documents may apply. Either category can also involve separate arrival forms or other entry requirements.
How long can I stay in a country if I travel under the visa exemption modality?
Toggle faqs
Your permitted stay depends on the destination and the period immigration grants you.
Schengen allows Canadians up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire area.
Other destinations use different limits. Always check your entry record rather than assuming you received the maximum stay.
Can I travel abroad if my Canadian passport expires in less than 6 months?
Toggle faqs
Possibly. 6 months of remaining validity isn’t required everywhere. For Schengen travel, your passport generally needs 3 months beyond your planned departure and must have been issued within the previous 10 years.
Check your destination, transit countries, and airline requirements before traveling.
Does my current country of residence change the visa requirements for my passport?
Toggle faqs
Your passport nationality usually determines the starting requirement, but residence status can create exceptions. For example, qualifying residents of Ireland traveling to the UK from Ireland or certain nearby islands may be exempt from the UK ETA.
Check rules covering both your nationality and residence status.
What happens if my flight from Canada has a short layover in a country that requires a visa?
Toggle faqs
A short connection doesn’t automatically exempt you from transit requirements. Rules depend on the airport, route, and whether you cross immigration. Collecting luggage or changing airports may require entry permission.
Check the transit country separately, even when your final destination allows visa-free travel.
